Can You Actually Teach Yourself Guitar and Play Famous Songs Quickly?

Being a guitar teacher, many people are very surprised when they find out how I learned to play the guitar. I am a living example and proof of the fact that you can learn to play the guitar, without having a personal guitar teacher. If I could do it, anyone can. I’ve been playing the guitar for about 15 years now, and true, I did have a musical background already, since I already played the piano and trumpet. Nevertheless, the guitar is totally different, so even though I already knew how to read music, I had to teach myself guitar basically from scratch. And it wasn’t as easy back than, as it is today.

Nowadays, if you decide you want to learn to play guitar (or anything else for that matter), what do you do? Google it! You’ll find an overwhelming amount of information, articles, videos, learn guitar products and guitar tutorials for beginners. In fact, you’ll find so much, it will become burdening, as you’ll end up jumping from one place to another without sticking with one program consistently.

Teaching yourself how to play the guitar takes time and dedication, but the end result will be more than worth it, you’ll never look back. First of all, make sure you find a well known website to learn the guitar from. I’ve seen several sites, which I will not name in this article, who try to get beginner guitar students to believe that they can become a guitar God in two days. Unfortunately, this is not possible for a number of reasons, but you’ll see for yourself when you start playing. Becoming good takes practice, that is the ultimate secret of learning guitar.

Once you start, you’ll never look back. There will be ups and downs, but if you keep at it, you’ll get better and better. One great way to keep yourself motivated is to learn guitar songs for beginners at an early stage already. Playing songs is much more exciting than practicing simple exercises, since you’ll be playing songs you’ve known for years.

Here is the condensed lesson plan I utilize with all of my guitar pupil:

1. First of all, learn the basic building blocks of playing the guitar.

2. Use the basic techniques learned in simple, yet famous guitar songs

3. Than I teach my students how to play chords

4. Use the guitar chords from step 3. to learn easy songs that require the strumming of chords

5. Learn more techniques

6. Refine the new technique by using them in songs

You basically only use normal exercises when first encountering a new technical element, but actually learn it and learn to use it by playing beginner guitar songs which require it. I’ve used this method with hundreds of personal students, and thousands of online guitarists as well. The result of the process is the increased motivational factor, in that the new guitar pupil will actually want to practice on his/her own time as well, since they’ll already be making music. And as you know, the more you practice, the better you get.

Teaching yourself guitar online is very possible nowadays, there’s no doubt about it. Make sure you find a site that offers a structured method of learning, and you’ll be off to a good start already. Learning to make music is one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself and my surroundings, I hope you will do the same.
