Nintendo released the DSi in Japan in 2008, and gamers everywhere were excited to download games and content online. There are legitimate DSi game downloads, but you have to be careful to avoid spyware, adware, and viruses.
Nintendo’s DSi Shop is the best place to download content for your DS, using the same Nintendo Points model to buy games that the Wii uses. Except for games that use the DS Game Boy Advance slot, like the Guitar Hero games, all DS games are completely compatible with the DSi. The best of the DSi game downloads are DSiWare games, which can only be purchased by downloading them from the DSi Shop.
The download process is relatively simple. Once a game is purchased, it is first downloaded to the either DSi’s internal memory or an external SD card. The content must be transferred to the internal memory before it is playable, however. Nintendo fixed this issue with the Wii, as Wii Ware games are now playable directly from a SD card; hopefully a firmware upgrade for the DSi will allow games to be played from a SD card as well. It is important to note that while DSiWare applications can be backed up to a SD card, they are only playable on the DSi that downloaded the content.
There are hacked DS games online, but these are illegal and many of them have spyware, adware, and other things that could hurt your DSi. You can’t play these illegal games on your DSi because of a firmware update. This is like when you download a game onto your SD card, you can only play it on one DSi. It won’t be playable on another DSi.
The DSi shop gives you access to downloadable games and consoles just like the Wii shop. You should only download legally through Nintendo. You want to keep your DSi adware and virus free.
