If you’ve always thought that sports persons are lucky when they go on to win medals, you’ve only got to look at Bob Gibson to see the lack of truth in that notion. His 16 year career span resulted in his name being added to the Hall of Fame in’81 and you can be sure that his victories through the years couldn’t just be credited to luck. If luck had been in charge, he wouldn’t have gone that far.
The same principle applies to the game of poker. As a poker player you certainly need luck but having too much of it can also become an issue. Yes, you actually read that right. If you’re not sure what I mean then keep reading to find out why too much of luck is actually a poker player’s worst enemy.
First of all, let’s talk about luck as it affects beginner level poker players. ‘Luck’ often is responsible for such a player winning the pot. It does take on a variety of forms. The most common being an unusually good hand.
Talk about a skilled and experienced poker player, on the other hand, and you’ll see that they’d rather not have luck be a part of their winning equation. They’d rather depend on rational methods and calculations that tell them clearly what the odds are for them to win. It also helps to cut losses and keep them minimal. An unstable factor like luck can really ruin their careful calculations.
A lot of time when a good player wins a hand many people call that person ‘lucky.’ This is because the other people at the table threw their hand but a good player held on to his. This is pure logic, raise your bet to make others feel you have a better set than you do and make them give you the game. No luck, but plain logic.
The deal is that good players also have their lucky days but most of the time they are trying to make the most by thinking logically. So, if you have been winning a lot in poker recently solely because you have been having a great run with lady luck, then it’s a good time to make the most of it, as lady luck doesn’t usually remain with one person.
On the other hand, if you are a good player and are still losing, then take heart in the fact that at least you are playing logically and soon you will be back to your winning ways because of your analytical skills. Once you start playing mathematically then the one thing you don’t want is luck, as you will solely depend on your skills and sometimes luck could play havoc with your tactics.
