The Believer is a brutal appraisal of a young Jewish man in N.Y.C. who decides to become a neo-Nazi skinhead. He struggles with the inconsistency between his values and his heritage. Gosling gives a stellar performance as the youthful Jewish man which is loosely based on a true story. Cast includes Ryan Gosling, Summer Phoenix, Billy Zane, Theresa Russell, Glenn Fitzgerald and Ronald Guttman. (98 minutes, 2002)
The Sentinel from 1977. Smooth however tedious shocker in reference to N. Y.C. fashion model, who rents a home in Brooklyn, finds it’s occupied of demons and she is the next protector for the gateway to Hell. Cast includes Cristina Raines, Ava Gardner, Chris Sarandon, Burgess Meredith, Sylvia Miles, Jose Ferrer, Arthur Kennedy, John Carradine, Christopher Walken, Eli Wallach, Jerry Orbach, Jeff Goldblum, Beverly D’ Angelo, Martin Balsam, William Hickey, and Tom Berenger. The Meteor Man from 1993. Townsend plays a timid, nerdy school teacher with a terror of heights who gets hit by an strange emerald green meteor that turns him into a superhero. Wonderful “Superman in the Hood” narrative, filled of good values, but very few truly humorous minutes. Cast includes Robert Townsend, Marla Gibbs, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume, James Earl Jones, Roy Fegan, and Bill Cosby.
Ivan the Terrible, continuance of the legend of King Ivan IV, in which he takes on the boyars in a battle for power. Remarkable film is just a trace underneath its predecessor, Banned by Stalin due to dubious illustration of Ivan’s secret patrol, and not released till 1958. Cast includes Nikolai Cherkassov; Serafima Birman, Mikhail Nazvanov, Pavel Kadochnikov, and Andrei Abrikosov.
The In Laws from 1964. Everyone can relate to this difficult situation. The in laws are coming and you just have to endure. Do not try this at home! Unrated rendition runs 93. Cast includes Peter Falk, Alan Arkin, Richard Libertini, and Nancy Dussault.
Down Argentine Way from 1940. Entertaining 20th Century Fox musical with Grable in the film that raised her to stardom falling in love with slick Argentinean horse breeder Ameche. Miranda is fantastic in her first American movie, acting infectious Brazilian melodies with her own band and look out for the Nicholas Brothers, who do a dynamite forte number. Picture postcard color all the way through. Cast includes Don Ameche, Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, Charlotte Wood, Carrol Naish, Henry Stephenson, and Leonid Kinskey.
